Born in 1967, Emilio José Edo Mengibar was always surrounded by art. His grandfather owned a framing shop in his city of birth, Castellón de la Plana, Spain. From when he can remember he was painting and in 1996 he embraced art as a calling and profession.
He joined the Forum Ateneas in Madrid in 2003, and soon had exhibitions in Madrid, Sevilla, Bilbao, Granada, Zaragoza and Barcelona.
His works can be found in private collections throughout Europe and have always sold exceptionally well.
The 90’s in Spain, and especially the region of Valencia, was a time of great importance. The music and art scene exploded and a brave new world entered the psyche of the Spanish. Emilio prides himself as a nineties child and found a unique voice within this sphere.
His preferred medium is oil. The paintings are realistic, a yearning for a well loved past, but they introduce a subtle surrealistic touch, embracing the future. They mix nostalgia with desire, a yearning for more than is apparent. Shifting “what is” to what is desired. They show beauty and its inherent flaws.
His love for the Flemish painters of yesteryear, with their interplay between light and shade is evident in his work but not a driving force.
The painter has strong connections with South Africa and Europe, while still feeling deeply Spanish
