Cyril Coetzee

Since leaving academic life in 1990, Cyril Coetzee has been a full-time artist and has exhibited his paintings both locally and internationally. His works are included in various public and private collections worldwide, including the Royal Ontario Museum, Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Standard Bank in London and the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
Cyril Coetzee is a well-established portrait artist and has painted both informal and commissioned portraits throughout his career, in several ‘styles’, both realistic and expressionistic. He is best-known for the portrait of Nelson Mandela, which was used for the international stamp commemorating Mandela’s 90th birthday. Among the many well-known luminaries in the academic, legal, business and performing art spheres, Coetzee has been commissioned to paint portraits of Graça Machel, Matthews Phosa, Colin Bundy, Anton Rupert, Conrad Strauss and George Bizos.
Coetzee has curated or part-curated a number of exhibitions for the Standard Bank Gallery including: “Water: The Delicate Thread of Life”, 2011, “Exact Imagination: 300 Years of Botanically Inspired Art in South Africa”, 2014 and “Air: Inspiration-Expiration”, 2016. Coetzee has also written a much-lauded monograph on the work of Harold Voigt, “The Poetry of Sight”, published in 2006.
Coetzee has served as a Fine Art lecturer at Port Elizabeth Technikon and as an Art History lecturer at University of the Witwatersrand. Coetzee has been invited to give various lectures on Art History and on his own work in South Africa, England, Switzerland, the United States and Canada, and has offered public lecture cycles on art history.Awards won include the: Helgaard Steyn Award (2003), Vita Art Award (1993), the Rhodian ‘Guy Butler’ Creative Writer (1983), the Purvis Prize for Fine Art (Rhodes University, 1983), first prize for the NBS National Inter-Art School Competition (1982), the Kendall Bursary (1982) and Rhodes University Academic Colors (1981).In addition to his ongoing work as a painter and curator Cyril offers regular workshops and master classes in painting. Currently he teaches regularly to ca. 50 – 60 art students as a private art instructor.
